first feature down

So a month ago today I began production on my first feature as cinematographer. It was just as exciting of an experience as it was exhausting. Here's a list of things I learned from filming
  1. One piece of equipment will most likely break or at least cause some problems.
  2. You can plan all you want but sometimes you just have to make decisions on the day.
  3. Stick to your guts when it comes to unconventional lens choice, lighting or other creative choices. Don't let the doubt of anyone (other than the director) influence your creativity.
  4. There are time when you will have to fight for what you want/need.
  5. You will get sick.
  6. Take the time on the first few days to learn everyone's names. You'll need to talk to everyone at least once.
  7. Street sweeping will bring production to a halt. Make sure production is on top of this so it doesn't happen.
  8. People move slower by day 14
  9. Cheating the reverses for outdoor exteriors can sometimes work better for lighting and composition
  10. Sometimes you'll have to steal shots when the AD isn't looking ;)
